NCC Grants Licenses to 25 New Mobile Telecom Companies, Promoting Innovation and Competition.

17 Jun 2023

The Nigerian telecom industry is about to experience a major shakeup! The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has just given the green light to 25 ambitious companies, granting them licenses to operate as Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). It's like a breath of fresh air in a market dominated by big players like MTN, Globacom, Airtel, and 9mobile. But here's the twist: these MVNOs will be using the existing infrastructure already built by the telecom giants. Talk about a game-changer!

So, what does this mean for all of us consumers? Well, get ready to enjoy some fierce competition and lower costs for calls and data services. That's right! These new MVNOs are set to give the established players a run for their money. And let's be honest, who doesn't want cheaper phone bills? It's like music to our ears!

But wait, there's more! The NCC also recognizes the vital role MVNOs can play in reaching out to those remote, underserved communities. It's a step towards bridging the digital divide and ensuring that even our fellow citizens in rural areas get access to quality telecom services. Kudos to the NCC for their forward-thinking approach!

Now, let's talk about the startups. This is a golden opportunity for them to make their mark in the industry. By buying network capacity from established Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), these MVNOs can keep their costs low and pass on those savings to us, the customers. Plus, they have the freedom to offer specialized services that cater to our unique needs. It's like having a personalized telecom experience designed just for us. Talk about customer satisfaction!

The licensing process has categorized the companies into different tiers. We've got some real contenders here, folks. In tier 2, we have companies like Routelink Integrated Systems Ltd, Hazon Technologies Limited, Asel Telecom Nigeria Limited, Briclinks Africa Plc, Pisi Mobile Services Limited, Univasa Nigeria Limited, and Imose Technologies Limited. These guys mean business and are ready to make their mark.

Moving on to tier 3, we've got Amics Technologies Limited, Zegtel Limited, Telewyz Limited, Siu Telecommunications Network, Abrindex Nigeria Limited, Metropolitan Consortium Nigeria Ltd, and IPNX Nigeria Limited. They're all fired up and raring to go.

Tier 4 operators include Imbil Telecoms Solutions Nig. Ltd, Environmental Expressions Limited, and DMK Telecommunication Nig. Ltd. These companies are ready to make their voices heard in the industry.

And finally, in tier 5, we've got Systegra Technologies Limited, Choffan Communications Limited, Mab Consultant and Associates Ltd, H & Y Business Global Limited, Taima Technologies Ltd, Global Communication Extension Services Ltd, USKS Ventures International Ltd, and Paribas Communication Limited. They're the ones who believe they can go the distance and come out on top.

But here's the cherry on top: the NCC has raised a whopping N5.9 billion in licensing fees from these MVNOs. That's a staggering amount! It just goes to show the tremendous potential and interest in this industry. The licensing fees vary based on the tier, ranging from N500 million for tier 5 to N35 million for tier 1. It's a significant investment, but these companies are betting on their success.

So, get ready, folks! The telecom landscape is about to get a whole lot more interesting. With lower costs, improved services, and a fresh wave of competition, we're all set to benefit.
