uLesson, an edTech Startup launches an Open University offering undergraduate tech courses

10 Jun 2023

With the launch of Miva Open University, Nigerian ed-tech startup uLesson, which provides online K-12 education across Africa, is expanding into tertiary education to offer tech-focused undergraduate courses.

The pan-African distant e-learning institution will be a fully-licensed degree-awarding institution offering undergraduate courses in computing, computer science, cyber security, data science, and software engineering. It will also have a school for management and social science, with degrees in business administration, economics, accounting, and public policy and administration.

The announcement for the launch of Miva Open University comes just over a week after uLesson discontinued its 1:1 private coding tutoring sessions for kids, recording as the second time the startup has rolled back on its DevKids product.
Sim Shagaya, the founder of uLesson, said the launched university aims to "provide accessible, high-quality education that helps our students succeed in the digital marketplace."  The institution is hiring for various roles and intends to transform the tertiary education industry with the help of "passionate people”
By launching Miva Open University, uLesson will also come up against competitors and other Nigeria-based edtech startups which offer certifications in software engineering, product, data, and other tech courses.
