SafiriSalama, a startup based in Kenya, has launched a platform that offers end-of-life services, which it claims to be the first of its kind in Africa. The service includes a digital death notice, memorials, and a directory of funeral service providers. The beta version was introduced in November 2021, and the company is currently running a year-long consolidation campaign in Kenya before expanding to other African markets.
SafiriSalama has created three products, one of which is Death Notices, which allows users to create affordable digital death announcements that can be shared across several social media platforms. Memorials provide a subscription that enables the management of a loved one's funeral process through a user-friendly notice board. The Redbook is an online directory that connects verified service providers in the funeral and grief industry with families.
According to the company's CEO, John Nyongesa, people in Africa tend to avoid discussions about death or end-of-life planning, which makes them vulnerable to exploitation due to their lack of knowledge and emotional vulnerability. The startup aims to connect such individuals to the best service providers and help them manage the death of their loved ones efficiently and smoothly.
Nyongesa further stated that every life, regardless of status, is a story, and the internet is an equalizer. The startup has already raised $100,000 from a US angel investor and is now raising a pre-seed funding round to further develop its products.
