Robotaxis are coming to Las Vegas thanks to Uber

24 Jun 2023

Uber, a ride-hailing service, is teaming up with Boston-based Motional, an autonomous vehicle startup created through a collaboration between Hyundai and auto components manufacturer Aptiv, to introduce its first robotaxi service or self-driving trips in Las Vegas.

The all-electric IONIQ 5 robotaxis from Motional will be paired with Uber's ride-hailing and delivery platform as part of a 10-year agreement. In May, the collaboration started testing autonomous food delivery services through Uber Eats in Santa Monica, California.
The business declared its intention to ultimately include Los Angeles in the robotaxi initiative. The latest agreement shows that Uber is moving forward even as competitors cut back, two years after selling its autonomous car branch. Additionally, in August, Lyft joined forces with Motional to launch a self-driving ride-hailing service in Las Vegas.

Apple reduced its self-driving ambitions for its next electric vehicle and pushed back the goal debut date by nearly a year to 2026, according to a Bloomberg story, while Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG-backed Argo AI shut down in November and early December.
