Nigeria Launches Digital Climate Advisory for Farmers

26 Feb 2025

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has announced a groundbreaking partnership with weather intelligence company Tomorrow.io to launch a Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) system aimed at supporting farmers across the country. This innovative initiative is set to transform the way farmers access critical weather information, enhancing their ability to make informed decisions that protect their crops and livelihoods.

The DCAS system will deliver location-specific weather alerts directly to farmers' mobile phones via SMS, ensuring they receive timely and accurate information tailored to their specific geographical areas. This capability is particularly crucial in a country where the agriculture sector faces numerous challenges, including unpredictable weather patterns exacerbated by climate change. With access to reliable weather data, farmers can effectively plan their activities and mitigate risks associated with adverse weather conditions.

Adekemi Adisa, General Manager of Sustainability & Shared Values at MTN Nigeria, emphasized the importance of the DCAS system in addressing the challenges faced by farmers. "This service is designed to deliver actionable weather advisories tailored to specific locations, providing smallholder farmers with the insights they need to make better decisions," she stated. Smallholder farmers, who often lack access to advanced weather forecasting tools, stand to benefit significantly from this initiative.

The DCAS system will leverage MTN's extensive mobile network and data capabilities, combined with Tomorrow.io's advanced weather intelligence technology. This collaboration aims to provide farmers with real-time weather updates and alerts, enabling them to respond promptly to changing conditions. The decision to deliver alerts via SMS ensures inclusivity, allowing even those without internet access to benefit from the service.

As the agricultural landscape continues to evolve in Nigeria, the introduction of the DCAS system represents a significant step towards empowering farmers with the tools they need to navigate the challenges posed by climate change. By providing access to accurate weather information, this initiative aims to enhance food security and improve the livelihoods of farmers across the nation.

The launch of the Digital Climate Advisory Services system marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria's agricultural sector, showcasing the potential of technology to drive positive change and support sustainable farming practices.
