From Waste to Worth: LG Inspires Eco-Action with Hinckley Recycling Partnership

09 May 2025

In a commendable initiative coinciding with Earth Day 2025, LG Electronics has taken significant strides to protect the environment in Nigeria by partnering with Hinckley Recycling, a leading e-waste management company. This partnership aims to launch an E-Waste Collection Drive, aligning perfectly with this year's Earth Day theme: “Our Power, Our Planet.”

Promoting Responsible Recycling

The E-Waste Collection Drive encourages Nigerians to recycle old or unused electronics responsibly while raising awareness about the severe environmental and health risks associated with improper e-waste disposal. With millions of electronic devices reaching the end of their life every year, e-waste has become one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally.

Mr. Paul Mba, Corporate Marketing Manager at LG Electronics Nigeria, articulated the initiative’s broader purpose: “This initiative isn’t just about electronics—it’s about empowering people to be part of the climate solution.” The statement emphasizes a collective responsibility towards environmental stewardship.

Addressing E-Waste Challenges

Every year, a staggering amount of electronic waste—including televisions, refrigerators, mobile phones, and other gadgets—finds its way into landfills, negatively impacting the environment and human health. These discarded items often contain harmful materials that can lead to pollution of air, water, and soil. The partnership between LG and Hinckley Recycling aims to combat this issue by providing Nigerians with convenient options to recycle their old electronics while ensuring that all returned products are processed safely and ethically through internationally certified methods.

Community Engagement and Participation

Customers have actively participated in the e-waste drive, dropping off various electronic items at designated Hinckley Recycling collection centers across Lagos. These centers have become pivotal locations for community engagement, enabling households and businesses to responsibly declutter while contributing to environmental preservation. Each item returned symbolizes a personal commitment to sustainability, diverting waste from landfills and facilitating the recovery and recycling of valuable materials.

Inspiring Future Generations

Mr. Adrian Clews, Managing Director of Hinckley Group, expressed pride in collaborating with LG for this Earth Day campaign, emphasizing a shared vision for a cleaner Nigeria that goes beyond collection to inspiring future generations on environmental protection. Mr. Bharat Kumar Kundra, a Youth Champion and Change Catalyst at UNICEF, echoed this sentiment, pointing out the significant potential of Nigeria’s youth population to drive environmental change. He remarked, “Today’s young people aren’t just inheriting environmental challenges—they’re actively creating solutions.”

A Movement Towards Circular Economy

Through this initiative, LG and Hinckley Recycling are driving community participation and emphasizing the importance of circular economy practices. By linking environmental responsibility with technology, LG not only addresses immediate waste management concerns but also nurtures the development of future environmental leaders among Nigerian youth. The initiative embodies the philosophy of "Recycle Today, Restore Tomorrow," establishing a precedent for corporate responsibility in Africa and beyond.
