MTN announced the investment of $1 billion in Ghana over the next five years to promote faster sectoral growth in the West African country using 5G technology after the Ghanaian government dropped its tax worth $ 773 million.
This investment will focus on fulfilling Ghana's vision of a digital country as it plans to implement a national roaming plan and airtime distribution in partnership with other operators.

Officer Ralph Mupita, the ceo, said the company was committed to investing in Ghana despite short-term headwinds. The company has been taking part in helping Ghana in recent years.
The tax claim was first issued after the revenue authority audited the company for the years 2014 to 2018 and inferred that it declared, its revenue by 30% during the period.
During 2021, its capital expenditure (Capex) in the country totaled GHS1.5 billion ($220 million) and it spent GHS14.3 million ($2.1 million) on socio-economic initiatives.
MTN partners with Electronic Communication (GIFEC), and it forms part of the Ghanaian Government's rural technology project to extend communication to more rural communities.
However, MTN said the initiative will help it and its telecom peers to share infrastructure as a way to increase the efficiency of the infrastructure spent, to also expand high-quality coverage, and speed further development.
