Kenya Government Partners with Huawei for ICT Infrastructure Development and Digitization

04 Nov 2023

The Kenyan Government has forged an agreement with technology giant Huawei Technologies, aiming to bolster the country's information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure. The strategic partnership also encompasses an initiative to drive digital transformation across various sectors, including transportation, e-government, education, and digital energy.

Kenya's President William Ruto, during his visit to Huawei's Beijing Executive Briefing Center (EBC), emphasized the urgency of transitioning to a green, digital, and innovative economy in Kenya. He lauded Huawei as a reliable partner in enhancing digital infrastructure, citing the company's expertise in ICT technologies driven by substantial research and development investments.

"We recognize the urgent need to develop a green, digital, and creative economy in Kenya. In this regard, we therefore regard Huawei as a reliable partner of Kenya in terms of improving digital infrastructure, with its pioneering strength in ICT technologies driven by its heavy R&D investment," stated President Ruto. "We look forward to strengthening the partnership for more positive outcomes of ICT infrastructure construction and industrial digitalization."

Huawei's Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Liang Hua, expressed the company's readiness to work closely with the Kenyan government to foster the growth of the digital and creative economies in the nation. He outlined Huawei's commitment to contributing to Kenya's development in various fields, such as ICT connectivity infrastructure, the establishment of a national data center, and solar power generation. Mr. Liang Hua also emphasized Huawei's dedication to enhancing the digital skills and literacy of Kenya's youth.

"Huawei hopes to facilitate Kenya's development in fields like the ICT connectivity infrastructure, national data center, and solar power generation. We will continue to dedicate ourselves to improving young Kenyans' digital skills and literacy. Huawei values openness, collaboration, and win-win results. We will enhance investment in the R&D of cutting-edge technologies across connectivity, computing, and digital power. Our team will work with local customers and partners to make greater contributions to the digital economy in Kenya," said Mr. Liang Hua.

Since commencing operations in Kenya in 2003, Huawei has been steadfast in its efforts to enhance ICT infrastructure, provide digital services, and advance digital skills in the country. The global ICT leader has played a pivotal role in supporting the construction of critical computing power infrastructure, including the National Optical Fiber Backbone Infrastructure (NOFBI) and the KONZA National Data Center. In 2021, Huawei also collaborated with Safaricom to launch the first 5G network in East Africa.

Moreover, Huawei has consistently supported Kenya's inclusive development and digital skills agenda, contributing to innovations like M-PESA and the Hustler fund. The company has provided digital skills training to approximately 10,000 Kenyan individuals over the past year.

This partnership between the Kenyan government and Huawei marks a significant step towards a more connected and digitally empowered future for Kenya, ushering in a new era of technological progress and innovation.
