Motorola Integrates Perplexity AI to Transform Smartphones into Native Answer Engines

Motorola is taking a bold step in mobile AI by integrating Perplexity AI’s search capabilities directly into its smartphones. This partnership represents Perplexity AI's most important distribution move yet, as its technology will be embedded natively within Motorola devices, rather than functioning solely as an app. As a result, Motorola will be the first smartphone brand to ship devices with Perplexity AI deeply integrated into its system.

With Perplexity now operating alongside established AI assistants such as Microsoft’s Copilot, Google’s Gemini, and Meta’s AI, users will be able to manage voice queries and receive direct answers to complex questions straight from their phones. To celebrate the launch, Motorola users will receive three months of free access to Perplexity Pro, the premium version that offers advanced features like Deep Research for a more assistant-like search experience.


The goal of this integration is to shift user behavior from the traditional model of clicking through search results to receiving direct, conversational answers embedded in their daily mobile experience. Perplexity’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas, emphasized that their priority is not immediate revenue generation but rather establishing user habits. By embedding Perplexity AI into the smartphone's operating system instead of launching it as a separate app, Motorola aims to increase daily usage, particularly during weekends when AI tools often see lower engagement.

This strategic approach contrasts with recent AI-focused hardware experiments that have struggled with user adoption and complexity, such as Humane’s AI Pin and Rabbit’s R1 device. By leveraging its existing smartphone platform, Motorola minimizes risks and introduces a new layer of AI capability in a context that users are already familiar with.
