Hedera Announces $1 Million Africa Hackathon to Support Africa’s Digital Future

02 Jun 2025

The Hashgraph Association, a Swiss non-profit organization, in partnership with the Exponential Science Foundation, has launched the Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025—a groundbreaking pan-African initiative designed to catalyze practical blockchain applications across the continent. With a total prize pool of USD 1 million, the hackathon is open to developers from all experience levels across Africa, reflecting a strong commitment to fostering innovation and technological advancement in the region.

A Pan-African Call for Innovation

Scheduled to run from August 1 to September 30, 2025, the hackathon will feature a hybrid format, combining both online and in-person events held in over 20 African cities, including Lagos, Nairobi, Cairo, and Cape Town. The organizers aim to attract over 10,000 participants from at least 15 countries, supported by more than 50 global and regional partners, including over 100 universities and tech hubs.

Focus on Practical Blockchain Solutions Across Sectors

Participants will build decentralized solutions on the Hedera network, targeting key sectors such as:

  • Finance and Real-World Asset (RWA) Tokenization
  • Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Initiatives and Sustainability
  • Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI)
  • Artificial Intelligence, Gaming, Metaverse, and NFTs

The hackathon encourages integration with emerging technologies like AI, Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and quantum computing, aiming to push the boundaries of Web3 innovation.

Support for Participants and Building Capacity

To promote widespread participation, the event will provide comprehensive support through Hedera Academy, mentorship from certified engineers, and training that equips developers with the skills needed to succeed. This capacity-building effort aims to nurture a new generation of blockchain talents across Africa.

Africa’s Growing Role in Web3

Africa has rapidly emerged as a testing ground for Web3 adoption, driven by its youthful developer base and hunger for innovative digital solutions. However, challenges such as limited capital access and infrastructural gaps have hindered progress. The Hedera Africa Hackathon seeks to address these barriers by offering financial incentives, training programs, and regional collaborations that empower local talent and showcase Africa’s potential as a hub for blockchain innovation.

A Global Perspective on Africa’s Digital Future

This initiative reflects a broader trend where leading global Web3 ecosystems recognize Africa not only as a source of innovative talent but also as a vital market for relevant use cases. As the continent continues to develop its digital economy, the Hedera Africa Hackathon positions Africa as a key player in shaping the future of decentralized technology.
