Google to Delete Millions of Inactive Gmail Accounts.

02 Dec 2023

Google has announced that it will be deleting millions of inactive Gmail accounts starting in December 2023. This move is part of an effort to enhance user security and reduce the risk of cyber threats.

Google will be sending multiple notifications to users of inactive accounts before any action is taken. These notifications will be sent to the primary email address associated with the account, as well as any recovery email addresses that have been added.

To keep your Gmail account active and avoid being deleted, you simply need to use it regularly. This could include opening or sending an email, using Google Drive, downloading an app on the Google Play Store, or simply making a Google search while logged in to the account.

Google is deleting inactive accounts for several reasons. First, inactive accounts are more susceptible to cyber threats. Hackers can easily find passwords for inactive accounts on the dark web, and they may be able to access the account and steal personal information.

Second, deleting inactive accounts helps Google manage its storage resources. Google stores a lot of data for its users, and deleting inactive accounts helps to free up space for active users.

All data in deleted accounts will be permanently deleted. This includes emails, documents, spreadsheets, calendar appointments, photos, and videos.

There are a few exceptions to the new policy. For example, any Gmail account that has posted a video to YouTube will not be deleted, regardless of when it was last active. Additionally, Google Workspace accounts are not affected by the new policy.

If you have a Gmail account that you haven't used in a while, you should log in and use it regularly to avoid having it deleted. You can also download your data from Google Takeout if you want to keep a copy of your information.
