Developing News: OPay Clarifies Accounts Registered Without Owners' Consent

04 Nov 2023

In a recent development, OPay, a prominent tech company, has issued a statement addressing concerns related to mobile numbers that were found to be registered with OPay accounts without the owners approaching the company for account opening.

According to the statement released by the company and made available to Nairametrics, OPay has investigated this matter. The results of their investigation revealed that some of the mobile numbers in question had, at some point in 2019 and 2020, created an OPay account.

OPay emphasized that its wallet creation process strictly adheres to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)-established registration procedure, which requires users to input a one-time password (OTP) authentication from their phones to proceed. Additionally, the company made it clear that it has never created or operated an account on behalf of any individual.

OPay's Statement

Kunle Adeyemi, the Head of Marketing at OPay, issued the following statement regarding the matter:

"24 hours ago, we received information regarding active accounts and wallets on our OPay app, which owners alleged had been created without their knowledge or consent. We immediately initiated an investigation to verify the authenticity of these claims, as all OPay wallets are registered in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Based on our investigation, we found that these accounts were indeed opened by the owners at various times, primarily between 2019 and 2020. When contacted by our team, some individuals could not recall whether or when they opened the account.

At least four of the complaints received via social media have been examined, and all four individuals have been contacted to address their concerns. It is important to note that some of these accounts have remained inactive since their creation. As a law-abiding and strictly regulated entity, we have asked these individuals if they wish to keep the accounts, and we have honored their preferences.

This statement by OPay sheds light on the situation and affirms its commitment to resolving the concerns of its customers while upholding regulatory standards. The company remains open to further inquiries and resolutions related to these accounts.
