Apple’s iPhone 16 Launches Without Long-Awaited AI Features, Raising Consumer Expectations

18 Oct 2024

Apple Inc. is facing a unique challenge with the launch of its latest iPhone 16 lineup, as the device arrives in stores without its most anticipated feature: Apple Intelligence, the company's new AI software. The iPhone 16 will debut across nearly 60 countries, including the US, China, India, Australia, and South Korea, but users will need to wait to experience the AI capabilities, which are expected to roll out gradually over the coming weeks and months through software updates.

This situation places Apple in a delicate position. While the company has been actively promoting the AI software since June, some potential buyers might be hesitant to purchase the device immediately, preferring to wait until they can access the full range of new features. Meanwhile, the hardware improvements in the iPhone 16 are considered incremental compared to previous models. One of the more notable enhancements is a Camera Control button, which allows for easier photo and video capture, though this isn’t a revolutionary change.

Despite the delay in the AI rollout, analysts remain optimistic about Apple’s sales prospects. Wall Street projects an 8% growth in revenue for the December quarter, which would mark the strongest performance for that period since 2021. This boost is especially important as the holiday season approaches.

The new iPhone 16 series includes two standard models, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, alongside the higher-end Pro and Pro Max models. Pre-orders for these devices began last week, with shipments starting on Friday. While Apple stores may not see the massive crowds they once did, loyal fans have still lined up at select locations around the globe. However, it remains to be seen if everyday consumers will flock to the new lineup.

Initially, the iPhone 16 units will run iOS 18, but to access the Apple Intelligence features, users will need to update to iOS 18.1, which is slated for release in October. Visually, the iPhone 16 sticks to the design introduced with the iPhone 12 in 2020, though it comes with improved battery life and camera enhancements. Pricing for the new devices starts at $799 for the standard version, with the Pro Max priced at $1,199.
