About

Kigali and Nairobi-based Ampersand is an African manufacturer of electric motorcycles, battery packs and charging systems designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of taxi and delivery motorbikes in Sub-Saharan Africa. Ampersand is Africa's first light electric vehicle startup, with the largest fleet, team and R&D investment, and longest track record, and only scale-ready technology. The company offers electric motorcycles, and a fleet of Ampersand's unique battery packs from it's network of battery swapping stations. Ampersand serves Africa's largest fleet of electric motorcycles, which already cover the distance from Cape to Cairo four times a day. Ampersand's swappable battery packs and powertrain can readily integrate into almost all major petrol motorcycle chassis that are already on the market in Africa. By eliminating the upfront battery cost, charging wait times and offering a comprehensive charge network, there's nothing stopping half of all vehicle traffic in Africa - i.e. commercial motorbikes - from going electric. Ampersand has a waiting list of 7200 customers, and requests for over 53,000 motorbikes from it's vehicle-financing partners in Kenya and Rwanda. Holdco is Delaware registered. $4M Series A raised in March 2021. Raising series B in Q4 2022.
