VP Harris Unveils Ambitious $100 Million Plan to Empower the Next Generation of African Leaders

10 Jun 2023

The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, has outlined ambitious plans to empower the next generation of African leaders. VP Harris revealed during the recent US-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C. that the government would spend more than $100 million in the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI).

The Young African Leaders Exchange, a first-of-its-kind pan-African virtual platform designed by USAID in collaboration with other important players, will be established as part of this exciting effort. The exchange will bring together members of the African Diaspora and other significant personalities with approximately 28,000 YALI graduates from 49 Sub-Saharan African nations, allowing them to network.

The exchange will also emphasize promoting women's and marginalized youth leadership, showcasing new projects, boosting the role of mentors and coaches, and aiding young African leaders in securing grants or internships.

With the increased financing, YALI will be able to educate and mentor even more young African men and women in leadership positions, resulting in revolutionary change for the whole continent. With this support, YALI will also be able to engage the corporate sector, the African Diaspora, and governments to enhance social inclusion, gender equality, digital connection, business and entrepreneurship, and public administration and civic leadership among young African leaders.

The additional financing will also allow for the first pan-African YALI Alumni Expo and Trade Show, which will highlight alumni's outstanding ideas and expand their contacts with experts from industry, civil society, government, and the diaspora.

YALI is the United States' hallmark initiative to invest in Africa's future generation of leaders. Since its inception in 2010, it has equipped Africans with skills and training that have improved their lives and allowed them to solve difficulties in communities and nations throughout the African continent. The Mandela Washington Fellowship is part of the program, which sends African civic, commercial, and community leaders to American schools and institutions for academic study, leadership training, and networking. Furthermore, the YALI Regional Leadership Centers (RLCs) provide in-person and online training in business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, and public management throughout the year, as well as chances for professional growth and networking. Another organization that offers free tools and resources to assist young African leaders gain the skills and connections they need to be a positive force for change in their communities is the YALI Network.

This is an exciting moment for Africa's future, and investing in young leaders will be critical to unlocking the continent's potential. For additional information, see USAID's Young African Leaders Initiative website.
