United States Consul General Discusses Nigeria's AI Policy and Digital Economy with Temitayo Jaiyeola.

In a recent interview with Temitayo Jaiyeola, the United States Consul General, Will Stevens, delved into Nigeria's stance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) adoption and the intricate dynamics of its digital economy.

Stevens elucidated Nigeria's evolving approach to AI, particularly from a policy perspective, highlighting the significance of the recently concluded U.S.-Nigeria Binational Commission. This forum, established over 15 years ago, serves as a platform for high-level engagement between the two nations. With a focus on fostering partnerships and addressing mutual interests, the Commission underscores Nigeria's pivotal role in U.S. relations within Africa.

Regarding AI, Stevens emphasized Nigeria's growing prominence in the global tech landscape, citing Lagos as a hub for AI development. He emphasized collaborative efforts between the U.S. and Nigeria in shaping AI frameworks and ensuring inclusivity in data representation.

Furthermore, Stevens outlined plans for an upcoming AI conference in Lagos, aimed at facilitating joint research and development initiatives and fostering dialogue on data privacy and access.

In addressing cybersecurity concerns, Stevens highlighted bilateral efforts to combat transnational cybercrime and enhance critical infrastructure protection. He underscored the importance of collaboration in mitigating cyber threats and fostering digital resilience.

Discussing Nigeria's digital infrastructure deficit, Stevens emphasized the need for extending high-speed internet access beyond major cities to promote economic growth and job creation. He emphasized the role of transparent regulatory frameworks in attracting investment and diversifying infrastructure.

Reflecting on gender disparities in the tech sector, Stevens highlighted U.S. initiatives such as Tech Women and SelectTech aimed at empowering female leaders and promoting inclusive participation in the digital economy. He underscored the economic benefits of women-led SMEs and reiterated the U.S. government's commitment to supporting gender-inclusive policies and programs.
