The UK's FCDO and Nigeria's AREAi launched a new program, SCALE (Smart Climate Awareness, Learning and Empowerment). It aims to boost Nigeria's digital space while promoting eco-friendly tech practices.
Gideon Olanrewaju, AREAi CEO, highlighted the growing importance of technology and the rising concern about its environmental impact. Nigeria's ICT sector, he said, is a major greenhouse gas emitter, responsible for 34% of the country's total emissions.
Olanrewaju emphasized the need for a multi-pronged approach to reduce ICT emissions, including collaboration, policy changes, and public engagement. The SCALE program, funded by the UK's Digital Access Program, will use research, public awareness campaigns, and capacity building to achieve this.
"We're researching tech's impact on emissions," Olanrewaju said. "We'll publish a report and recommendations for Nigeria's transition to net-zero tech."
Idongesit Udoh, head of the UK's Digital Access Program, praised SCALE's innovative approach. "This citizen-driven program can significantly raise awareness of digital sustainability," Udoh said. He reaffirmed the UK's support for Nigeria's sustainable digital development.
