Tizeti & FiberOne: Nigerian ISPs From Hell

13 Jun 2024

As internet usage evolves from archaic dial-up connections to modern fiber-optic and satellite internet, the Nigerian market has seen a surge in internet service providers (ISPs). Among them, Tizeti and FiberOne stand out for all the wrong reasons. Despite their promises of transforming Nigeria's internet scene, a closer investigation exposes a pattern of deception, inefficiency, and consumer abuse that should make any prospective subscriber think twice. This exposé is based on thorough research, client testimonies, and a critical review of their business methods.

Tizeti:

Tizeti, operating in over four states, has marketed itself aggressively as a leader in providing radio powered internet services. However, the reality of their operations paints a starkly different picture.

1. Installation Delays and Equipment Recycling:

Customers are lured in with promises of quick setup and efficient service. Yet, many have experienced prolonged delays that stretch into weeks or even months. Worse, Tizeti has been known to recycle equipment from late-paying clients and sell these old, often broken items to new customers at full price. This tactic not only deprives potential clients but also raises severe ethical concerns about their business model.

2. Substandard Connectivity and Unethical Installations:

To meet internal KPIs, Tizeti’s engineers have been reported to install radio receivers in locations with poor connectivity, fully aware that these installations will not work correctly. This results in subpar internet service, frequent disconnections, and immense frustration for the end-users.

3. Appalling Customer Service:

The customer service at Tizeti is a nightmare. Numerous accounts detail how reaching out for support is an exercise in futility. Their WhatsApp support often ignores messages, even in urgent situations. One customer, Chow Cafe, described their experience: "The actual worst internet provider. Customer service is trash. They actively ignore messages and cancel subscriptions prematurely. It’s a full scam."

4. Billing Issues and Exploitation:

Tizeti’s billing practices are equally dubious. Many customers report being overcharged, having their subscriptions cut short without notice, and being asked to pay additional fees without explanation. Tino Omoria recounted how the service quality dropped drastically after the first month, with speeds plummeting to 120kbps.

Customer Testimonials:

  • Chow Cafe: "The actual worst internet provider. The customer service is trash. They actively ignore messages and cancel subscriptions prematurely. It’s a full scam."

  • Tino Omoria: "Service started well but quickly deteriorated. Customer service is a joke. Browsing speeds drop to 120kbps."

  • Lenu Fakae: "Customer service and aftersales are the worst. They took my internet radio and never returned it, even after five months of follow-up."

FiberOne:

FiberOne entered the market with bold claims of providing superior fiber-optic internet services. However, their initial promise quickly unraveled into a series of customer service disasters and technical failures.

1. Bandwidth Overload and Unreliable Service:

FiberOne’s practice of oversubscribing their bandwidth means that many customers receive significantly less than the advertised speeds. This leads to inconsistent service quality, where paying for higher Mbps does not guarantee better performance. In areas with high subscriber density, users frequently experience slowdowns and disconnections.

2. Onboarding Nightmares and Refund Denials:

Customers have reported egregious delays in the installation process, often waiting weeks or months without any service. Requests for refunds are typically ignored, leaving customers out of pocket and without internet. One customer, Okolie, described paying for installation and waiting three weeks without any communication or progress. Eventually, they had to physically visit the office multiple times to demand a refund.

3. Dismal Customer Service:

FiberOne’s customer service is notorious for being unresponsive and outright rude. After receiving payments, they often ignore follow-up communications, leaving customers stranded. Ayodeji Ajere’s review exemplifies this: "They will scam you. Over a month after payment, no connection, and no response from customer service. They block you on WhatsApp and ignore emails."

Customer Testimonials:

  • Okolie: "Absolutely the most useless broadband service. Three weeks after payment, no service, no communication. A poor representation of a Nigerian brand."

  • Ayodeji Ajere: "They will scam you. Over a month after payment, no connection, no response from customer service. They block you on WhatsApp and ignore emails."

Regulatory Failure and Consumer Betrayal

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have failed to protect consumers from these predatory practices. Their inaction has allowed Tizeti and FiberOne to continue exploiting customers without consequence. This lack of oversight and accountability exacerbates the suffering of consumers who depend on these services for their daily lives.

Avoid Tizeti and FiberOne at All Costs

Tizeti and FiberOne have proven themselves to be untrustworthy and unreliable. Their business practices reflect a blatant disregard for customer satisfaction and ethical standards. The regulatory bodies' failure to hold them accountable further underscores the need for consumers to be vigilant and informed. This exposé serves as a stark warning: Avoid Tizeti and FiberOne if you value your money, time, and peace of mind.
