ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has decided to discontinue its LetsChat messaging app in Africa. Launched in 2021, LetsChat aimed to capture a share of the young African user base, competing with established platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram. A ByteDance spokesperson explained the decision: “After careful evaluation of our business priorities, we’ve made the difficult decision to shut down LetsChat. We recognize the value LetsChat provided for users in Africa and appreciate the opportunity to serve them.”
Despite initially gaining traction with nearly seven million downloads and a strong presence in countries such as Nigeria, Mali, Angola, and Côte d’Ivoire, LetsChat faced challenges in sustaining user growth. Sensor Tower data reveals a concerning 30% year-over-year decline in downloads during 2022.
As of Wednesday, LetsChat is no longer available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Additionally, the platform’s website confirms the discontinuation of its reward program, which previously rewarded users with credits for completing tasks.
While LetsChat had its moment, it ultimately struggled to compete with the widespread popularity of WhatsApp across the African continent. The dominance of platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook in Nigeria, Africa’s largest market, posed a significant hurdle for LetsChat. Despite ByteDance’s efforts to tailor the app to local needs, the existing solutions already met users’ demands for low-data communication.
In retrospect, LetsChat’s journey highlights the challenges faced by new entrants in a competitive landscape dominated by established players. As the app bids farewell, it serves as a reminder of the formidable position held by WhatsApp in Africa’s social media ecosystem.
