Starlink, Elon Musk's satellite internet service, has made history by launching in Nigeria with reduced costs. The company initially planned to charge Nigerians $600 (N440,000) for its hardware but has now reduced that cost to N274,098. Additionally, the monthly subscription plan has been lowered to N19,260.
The company, owned by SpaceX, is now quoting prices in Naira, allowing Nigerians to make payments using their Naira debit cards. Nigeria is the first African country to reach an agreement and deploy broadband technology on the network.
Responding to the launch, Nigeria's Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, expressed his gratitude to SpaceX for making this possible. "We have made it again," he said. "Thank you for hosting me at your headquarters in the USA in December 2022 to complete the logistics for the deployment."
Starlink's website reports that its Nigerian users will experience download speeds ranging from 50 to 200 Mbps. According to a 2022 survey, Nigeria currently ranks 150th worldwide in internet speed. The launch of Starlink marks a significant step in improving internet connectivity in the country.
