Spotify's popular AI DJ is getting company. The music streaming giant has launched AI playlists in beta, allowing users to create playlists based on written descriptions.
Initially available on Android and iOS in the UK and Australia, the feature lets users go beyond typical genre or era-based requests. Imagine asking for "songs to serenade my cat" or "beats to fight a zombie apocalypse!" Prompts can reference places, animals, activities, characters, colors, or even emojis.
For optimal results, Spotify recommends combining genres, moods, artists, and decades in your prompts. The AI also considers your listening history for a personalized touch.
After generation, you can further refine your playlist using the AI. Want something less upbeat? Ask for it! Dislike a song? Swipe left to remove it.
Technically, Spotify uses large language models (LLMs) to grasp your intent. It then leverages its personalization tech, analyzing your listening data, to craft a unique playlist tailored to your preferences.
This feature follows rumors in October 2023 when code hinting at "AI playlists based on your prompts" was discovered. Back then, Spotify remained tight-lipped. In December, however, a TikTok video showcasing the feature, dubbed "Spotify's ChatGPT," prompted confirmation from the company.
Accessing AI playlists is simple:
Go to "Your Library" in the Spotify app.
Tap the "+" button at the top right.
Select "AI Playlist" from the pop-up menu.
Feeling uninspired? Spotify offers suggestions like "instrumental electronica for focus" or "upbeat tunes to conquer your day."
The AI has limitations, though. It won't respond to offensive prompts or those focused on current events or brands.
This is just the latest in Spotify's AI endeavors. Last year's global rollout of AI DJ used a combination of Sonantic and OpenAI tech to create a virtual DJ voiced by Spotify's head of cultural partnerships, introducing personalized song selections. Spotify has also invested in in-house AI research and hinted at future uses like podcast summaries and AI-generated audio ads.
While a similar feature, Niche Mixes, already existed, it lacked AI and had a more limited understanding of user prompts.
