Sporting Lagos FC Clinches NPFL Promotion with Commanding 2-0 Victory

28 Apr 2024

Sporting Lagos FC has made history in Nigerian football by earning a significant promotion to the prestigious Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for the upcoming 2023–24 season. Their remarkable achievement was sealed with an impressive 2-0 victory over the Abeokuta Stormers in the second match of the Nigeria National League (NNL) Super Eight playoff.
The game took place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba on Monday, treating fans to an exhilarating performance from Sporting Lagos FC. Rivio Ayemwenre and Saturday Okon showcased their skills and finesse, scoring the crucial goals that secured their well-deserved promotion.

Sporting Lagos FC's journey to the NPFL started on a positive note with a narrow win against One Rocket in the playoff's opening game, thanks to a late goal by Emannuel Odafi. These consecutive victories propelled the team to the top of the Southern Conference table with an impressive six points. Heartland is closely trailing with four points, while the Abeokuta Stormers secured the third spot with one point. Unfortunately, Rocket FC finds itself at the bottom of the standings.
Earning promotion to the NPFL is a testament to the hard work and dedication demonstrated by Sporting Lagos FC throughout the season. Only the top two teams from each conference have the privilege of joining the elite ranks of the NPFL, making this achievement even more remarkable.
Sporting Lagos FC, founded by Shola Akinlade, co-founder and CEO of Paystack, has been making waves in the football world since its establishment in February 2022. Akinlade's commitment to the sport was further exemplified this year when he acquired a significant 55 percent ownership stake in Aarhus Fremad, a Danish third-tier division club, solidifying a unique sister club relationship between the two entities.

As the NPFL eagerly awaits the top contenders from both conferences, the excitement in the northern conference is palpable. Kano Pillars are inching closer to an NPFL return with an impressive 2-0 victory over DMD FC. Equally captivating was the match between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) FC and Kastina United, with EFCC FC emerging victorious with a hard-fought 2-1 scoreline.
Football enthusiasts and supporters eagerly anticipate the final playoff results, excited to witness which teams will ultimately prevail and secure their place in the illustrious Nigeria Professional Football League.
