South African Insurtech Startup, Root, Secures $1.5 Million in Funding for Rapid Expansion

26 Apr 2024

Root, a pioneering South African insurtech startup, has achieved a significant funding milestone, securing $1.5 million to drive its ambitious expansion plans. This funding round, led by Invenfin, the venture and growth capital arm of Remgro, represents a crucial step in Root's journey as it seeks to build upon its remarkable success in its home market and expand its global presence.
Established in 2016, Root has been at the forefront of reshaping the insurance industry by providing a comprehensive insurance platform. This platform is strategically designed to assist companies in the creation, promotion, and management of digital insurance products across Africa, the UK, and Europe. Root simplifies the complexities of insurance through user-friendly APIs, empowering businesses to independently develop and deploy innovative insurance products.

The recent funding injection is a significant milestone for Root, following a successful investment round in 2021. The fresh capital infusion will play a pivotal role in fueling Root's expansion efforts, particularly in the UK, where it officially launched in May, and across Europe. Root aims to capitalize on the growing demand for innovative insurance solutions in these regions.
Louw Hopley, co-founder at Root, expressed his enthusiasm for the continued support from Invenfin, stating, "We've forged a trusted partnership with Invenfin since their initial investment in our business two years ago. I'm delighted that they see further potential in our growth strategy and want to continue investing in our future as we expand internationally."

Root's strategic goals include solidifying its presence in the UK market while making significant strides into the broader European market. With Invenfin's backing, Root is strategically positioned to leverage the evolving landscape of insurance, where forward-thinking insurers recognize the significance of partner insurance channels, such as embedded insurance. Root aims to provide the robust, API-first technology necessary for insurers to enter these markets swiftly and confidently.

Theo van den Berg, investment executive at Invenfin, commended Root's visionary approach and underscored the importance of embedded insurance in shaping the future of the industry. He noted, "We share Root's belief that the future of insurance lies in embedding it into various offerings, enabling companies to provide more accessible, context-aware, and affordable insurance to consumers. We're excited to support Root once again, following our initial investment in 2021, as it accelerates its growth in the UK and beyond."
With its unwavering commitment to making insurance more accessible and adaptable, Root is well-positioned to disrupt the insurance landscape as it expands its operations into new territories. The $1.5 million funding injection reflects Root's potential and its determination to redefine insurance on a global scale.
