South Africa has marked a significant stride in sustainable transportation with the launch of its inaugural electric taxi. The unveiling comes as the country grapples with an ongoing electricity crisis. The project is a joint effort between Stellenbosch University (SU) and Rham Equipment, aimed at testing the waters of eco-friendly commuting.
TechNext reports that these new electric taxis can cover a distance of up to 120 kilometers before needing a recharge. Powered by a robust 90 kWh electric motor and equipped with a 53.76 kWh battery capacity, they stand as a remarkable advancement towards greener travel alternatives.
The collaborative initiative undertaken by SU and Rham Equipment involved a complex transformation process. The team successfully converted a conventional minibus taxi into a cutting-edge electric vehicle, proving that sustainable upgrades are possible even within existing transportation frameworks.
Stephan Lacock, a key contributor to the project, shared insights into the transformation process. He explained how the endeavor involved dismantling the original internal combustion engine (ICE) along with associated components like the gasoline tank, manual transmission, gas pipe, and radiator. Working alongside Rham Equipment, the team devised a replicable kit that includes vital electric powertrain components, such as the electric motor, inverter, charger, electronic control unit, and a single-speed reduction gearbox.
One notable feature of these electric taxis is the incorporation of regenerative braking technology. This innovation captures energy during deceleration, contributing to extended travel ranges and emphasizing the commitment to maximizing efficiency.
Professor Thinus Booyesen, a representative of SU’s Industrial Engineering Department, underscored the importance of local electric vehicle production to safeguard jobs and industry relevance. With minibuses constituting over 70% of trips within South Africa’s informal sector, the initiative aims to retrofit approximately 250,000 existing minibuses with electric propulsion. This ambitious move aims to provide cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives compared to brand-new electric vehicles while simultaneously raising awareness about local electric vehicle assembly and their positive environmental impact.
Addressing the prevalent energy crisis, project member Johan Giliomee proposed a forward-thinking solution: utilizing solar energy to power the electric taxis. This approach involves integrating solar panels and battery energy storage systems into the charging infrastructure. Additionally, there's consideration for hydrogen as a potential alternative energy source.
In a parallel development, Nigeria has also taken strides towards cleaner transportation, including the integration of electric and compressed natural gas (CNG) buses. The success of these green transportation endeavors hinges on strategic execution and effective implementation.
Despite South Africa’s persisting energy challenges, the introduction of electric taxis shines as a resolute step towards sustainable mobility. It signifies the nation's determination to embrace innovative solutions in the face of adversity, promoting a cleaner and more ecologically balanced future.
