Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is the first person to receive an Indonesian 10-year golden visa.

Sam Altman, the Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the inaugural recipient of Indonesia's Golden Visa, marking a significant moment in Southeast Asia's largest economy's drive to attract foreign investment. The Indonesian Golden Visa program, introduced at the end of August, has already garnered international attention.

The Director General of Immigration of Indonesia, Silmy Karim, formally issued Sam Altman's distinguished visa, which is classified as a "world figure" and has a 10-year validity. This was made clear in a statement on the Indonesian immigration website. The Golden Visa is a unique category of visa that offers residence permits with terms of 5 to 10 years with the intention of boosting the local economy. Regulations issued by the Minister of Law and Human Rights (Permenkumham) Number 22 of 2023 and the Minister of Finance Number 82 of 2023 launched this initiative.

This initiative is part of Indonesia's broader strategy to stimulate economic growth by enticing foreign investors to allocate their capital to the country. Investors making substantial financial commitments in Indonesia can now extend their stay for a period ranging from five to ten years. The visa, which requires a minimum investment of $350,000, allows Altman to stay for five years. He will enjoy privileges like priority security screening, extended stay periods, and simplified procedures. Altman's presence could significantly contribute to the development of artificial intelligence in Indonesia.

The popularity of ChatGPT, an OpenAI product, helped Sam Altman, the company's CEO, achieve recognition on a global scale. Elon Musk was one of the founders of OpenAI, which started out as a non-profit research group. In 2019, OpenAI changed its status to a "for-profit" business and partnered with well-known companies like Microsoft. Since then, OpenAI has created innovative AI tools like ChatGPT and DALL.E, spurring more investment in infrastructure that supports AI and illuminating the enormous potential of human-like intellect tapped through massive data centers.

Before becoming CEO of OpenAI, Altman co-founded Loopt, served as president of Y Combinator, and briefly held the position of CEO at Reddit. His visit to Indonesia in mid-June presented an opportunity to share his knowledge and expertise in the field of artificial intelligence. With the Golden Visa now in his possession, Altman is ideally positioned to significantly contribute to the advancement of artificial intelligence technology in Indonesia.
