Quora introduces Poe, a platform for interacting with ChatGPT-style AI chatbots.

15 May 2023

Quora launched Poe this week to enable users to ask questions, receive immediate answers, and converse with AI chatbots.
Poe, short for "Platform for Open Exploration," is invite-only and exclusively accessible on iOS, a Quora spokeswoman told TechCrunch.

Quora's 12 years of operation have taught us a lot about consumer internet products. "We're experienced in helping knowledge seekers," stated the spokeswoman. "We feel much of what we've learned can be applied to this new area."

Poe isn't a ChatGPT-like AI model built from scratch. ChatGPT's capacity to deliver responses that seem persuasive but aren't accurate has caused debate. Stack Overflow briefly barred users from publishing ChatGPT material, claiming the AI made it too simple to manufacture bogus replies.

Quora could've been in trouble if it trained a chatbot on its crowdsourced queries and answers. Users may have objected to their material being utilized in that manner, especially as certain AI systems regurgitate taught data (e.g., code). Some parties have criticized Stable Diffusion, DALL-E 2, and GitHub's Copilot, which they regard as stealing and benefiting from their work.
Microsoft, GitHub, and OpenAI are being sued for copyright violations by enabling Copilot to reuse licensed code without acknowledgment. On ArtStation, which allowed AI-generated art this year, users protested by putting "No AI Art" pictures in their portfolios.

Poe offers ChatGPT and other text-generating AI models at launch. (OpenAI doesn't give a public API for ChatGPT; Quora declined to reveal whether it had an agreement with OpenAI for Poe or early access.) Poe is like a texting service for AI models; users may talk with them. Poe's chat interface suggests themes like "writing assistance," "cooking," "trouble resolution," and "nature."

Poe ships with a few models at launch, but Quora expects to allow model suppliers (e.g., corporations) to contribute their models soon.

"A lot of research and development is going into increasing these models' capabilities, but to deliver all that value to people throughout the globe, we need strong, easy-to-use interfaces. We intend to create an interface so everyone may partake in the advantages of future progress.

AI chatbots, especially ChatGPT, may create prejudiced, racist, and poisonous material, as well as harmful code. Quora relies on the suppliers of Poe models to monitor and filter content.
"Model supplier companies have worked hard to avoid hazardous bot answers," a representative added.

The representative said Poe isn't part of Quora today or in the future. Quora wants to tweak and improve it over time, much like Google's AI Test Kitchen.

Poe's representative demurred when questioned about commercial reasons, claiming it's early. Quora, which generates much of its revenue from paywalls and advertising, might add paid features to Poe if it expands.
Quora is focusing on scalability, beta tester comments, and difficulties for now.

"The field is growing quickly, and we're more focused on solving Poe-related problems," a spokeswoman stated.
