PharmaRun Triumphs in the 2023 Pitch2Win Startup Contest

28 Apr 2024

In a thrilling turn of events, PharmaRun, the groundbreaking online platform that connects users with pharmaceutical products and services, has emerged victorious as the winner of the highly anticipated 2023 Pitch2Win startup competition. This remarkable platform, offering flexible payment options, including Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL), has captivated both investors and consumers alike.
The Pitch2Win competition, renowned for showcasing the most promising startups in the Web2 and Web3 sectors, unveiled its $10,000 pitching program a week before the event. This initiative aimed to identify groundbreaking solutions that tackle critical challenges and usher in positive transformation.
PharmaRun, founded in 2021 by Teniola Adedeji and Funmilola Aderemi, astounded the audience with its ability to overcome the limitations of conventional pharmacies. Adedeji and Aderemi, lifelong friends with an enduring bond spanning two decades, recognized the pervasive issue of pharmacies consistently facing stock shortages, leaving customers with limited options. Fueled by their determination to provide a solution, they established PharmaRun.
Adedeji explains, "We reside within the confines of our bustling cities like Lagos and Abuja, oblivious to the struggles faced by regions such as Jigawa, which only boast two pharmacies. Consequently, we receive orders from all corners of the country." This revelation underscores the pressing demand for a reliable and accessible platform like PharmaRun, capable of bridging the gap between underserved areas and essential pharmaceutical products.

The resounding success of PharmaRun can be attributed to various factors, including the substantial market opportunity it represents, the magnitude of the problem it addresses, and the exceptional execution by its dynamic team. Adedeji expresses her elation, exclaiming, "This was our inaugural experience pitching to an audience, making our victory all the more remarkable. It provides indisputable validation of our scalable product and the undeniable potential we possess. Triumphing over well-established founders? It's nothing short of astounding."
Looking ahead, PharmaRun harbors ambitious plans to secure $500,000 in funding for product development and customer acquisition. The triumph at Pitch2Win has not only validated their vision but also propelled them into the spotlight, granting them unprecedented visibility and access to potential investors. Adedeji expresses her heartfelt gratitude, stating, "We extend our profound appreciation to Pitch2Win for the remarkable opportunity they have bestowed upon us. This victory has opened doors, and we eagerly anticipate the next phase of our startup journey."
In addition to PharmaRun, the competition also honored two other exceptional startups. ZeroComplex AI secured the second-place position with their expertise in streamlining the integration of artificial intelligence into existing applications or the development of AI products and services. Their proprietary AI-API platform empowers small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and startups to harness the transformative power of AI.

Oystr Finance, the third-place startup, operates in the fintech sector, providing convenient access to alternative financial data, creditworthiness assessment, and identification verification for borrowers across Africa. Oystr Finance also garnered recognition through their selection for the esteemed ARM Labs Lagos Techstars Accelerator program, receiving funding of up to $120,000.
The judging panel for Pitch2Win consisted of distinguished figures from the business and investment realms, including Kola Aina from Ventures Platform, Eloho Omame from TLCom Capital, Hiro Mashita from SG Verse, Yuzuru Honda from Freakout Holdings, and Kola Owodunni from the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority. Their vast expertise and profound insights played a pivotal role in identifying the most promising startups among the competition.

During an invigorating investment panel discussion titled "The Funding Part is Over, What Next?," Maya Famodu, founder of Ingressive Capital, emphasized that despite the global reduction in startup investments, Africa remains an active investment destination. Famodu shared, "In the upcoming months, we are excited to announce our second fundraise. We are actively deploying capital and have a significant fund, having already invested in 17 ventures. Before the year concludes, we anticipate adding ten more to our portfolio. So, please, come and engage with us. We have the resources and sit alongside individuals who are ready to write checks. I can attest to this, given our shared interests in various ventures."
Olumide Soyombo, founder of Voltron Capital and fellow panelist, echoed his commitment to active investments and expressed a willingness to support promising startups competing in Pitch2Win, provided they demonstrate sensible valuations. This statement underscores the immense potential and favorable investment opportunities awaiting startups within the current landscape.
