Oando to Deploy AI in Drilling Operations to Enhance Efficiency

25 Feb 2025

Oando, one of Africa's leading energy providers, is set to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into its upcoming drilling operations, aiming to boost operational efficiency and optimize resource management. CEO Wale Tinubu announced the initiative during an interview with CNBC Africa at the World Economic Forum in Davos, underlining AI's potential to enhance decision-making processes and reduce costs associated with drilling activities.

In addition to the AI rollout, Tinubu shared news of Oando's partnership with the Lagos State government to introduce 5,000 electric buses for public transportation. These buses will utilize gas as a transitional fuel to generate electricity, reflecting Oando's commitment to reducing Nigeria's carbon emissions while fostering cleaner energy solutions across the country.

"We are dedicated to global decarbonization efforts and are implementing carbon capture techniques as well as promoting electric vehicles to support a just energy transition," Tinubu stated. The company's initiatives align with its vision of creating a sustainable energy future while addressing the pressing energy challenges facing the African continent.

Tinubu also emphasized the need to balance decarbonization initiatives with the realities of energy access in Africa, where approximately 45% of the population currently lacks access to electricity. He advocates for utilizing gas as a transitional fuel to meet the continent's energy demands while simultaneously advancing the agenda for cleaner energy alternatives.

As Oando prepares to implement AI in its drilling operations and expand public transportation options through electric buses, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of technological innovation and sustainable energy practices in Africa. This dual approach not only promises enhanced operational efficiency but also aims to contribute positively to the region's environmental goals.

With these initiatives, Oando is taking proactive steps to navigate the energy transition, reinforcing its commitment to addressing climate change while ensuring reliable energy access for millions across the continent.
