Nigeria's Central Bank introduces the CBN Licensing, Authorization, and Request Portal (CBN LARP)

05 Oct 2023

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has introduced a modern digital platform for Microfinance Bank (MFB) license applications. This innovative step into the digital world is called the CBN Licensing, Authorization, and Request Portal (CBN LARP), and it's set to change how financial licensing works in Nigeria. Let's take a closer look at this big change.

Embracing the Digital Shift The CBN's introduction of the CBN LARP represents a big change from the old way of doing things with paperwork. Starting on September 25, 2023, everyone applying for an MFB license must use the CBN LARP. This new way will be in place until December 30, 2023, after which you can't use paper anymore.

Isa AbdulMumin, an important person at the Central Bank of Nigeria, says this digital platform is a game-changer. It makes applying for a license faster and easier, and it lets you talk directly to the people in charge, with strong security to keep your information safe.

Helping More People Get Banking Services To understand how important this is, you need to know how microfinance banks (MFBs) help people in Nigeria. MFBs give financial services to people who don't have easy access to banks. They help with saving money, getting loans, sending money within Nigeria, and other important services.

MFBs mostly help people who work, families with low incomes, people who don't use banks, and people with disabilities. They also help small business owners and farmers. So, they're very important for making sure more people can use banks and improve their lives.

Different Types of Licenses MFB licenses in Nigeria come in three types based on where they can operate:

  • Unit MFB: These MFBs can work in just one place and need to have at least N20 million in money.
  • State MFB: State MFBs can work in a single state or the Federal Capital Territory (F.C.T.). They can open branches or cash centers in their state or the FCT with approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria. They need at least N100 million.
  • National MFB: The biggest type, national MFBs can work in many states, including the Federal Capital Territory. They can open branches all over Nigeria with permission from the Central Bank of Nigeria. They need to have at least N2 billion.

Building a digital future The launch of the CBN Licensing, Authorization, and Request Portal isn't just about technology; it's about making the financial system work better for everyone. This change puts Nigeria in line with what's happening in the world and shows that Nigeria wants to help its economy grow and make sure more people can use banks.

Looking ahead, the CBN plans to make more improvements using digital technology. They might use this new system for other types of licenses too, making things easier and simpler. This shows that Nigeria is looking forward to the future and wants to make sure people have good access to financial services.

The Central Bank of Nigeria's launch of the CBN Licensing, Authorization, and Request Portal is a big moment for the country's financial system. Going digital means it's easier, clearer, and more open to get MFB licenses. This change helps banks and also helps people who might not have had access to banking services before. It's a big step forward for Nigeria.
