Nigeria Gears Up for AI Leadership in Africa: National Policy in the Works.

22 Apr 2024

Nigeria is taking a significant step towards becoming a leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the African continent. The Federal Government announced plans to develop a comprehensive national policy for AI integration during the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Workshop held in Abuja this week.

This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, signifies Nigeria's commitment to leveraging AI for sustainable development. Bosun Tijani, the Minister, emphasized the workshop's role in strategizing how AI can fuel innovation, enhance national productivity, and ultimately improve the lives of Nigerians.

Recognizing the nascent stage of AI development globally, Tijani highlighted the opportunity for Nigeria to take a proactive approach. "We can avoid the fragmented approach other countries are taking," he said, "and develop a comprehensive strategy that considers both local needs and global implications."

Nigeria's proactive stance positions them as a frontrunner in African AI development.  "Investment in talent, AI technology, and computing infrastructure is crucial," Tijani explained, "and this is where Nigeria stands out from many African nations."

This policy development signifies Nigeria's ambition to be at the forefront of the AI revolution in Africa, ensuring the responsible and impactful use of this powerful technology.
