Netflix is reportedly expanding its gaming service to television sets as part of its efforts to expand its gaming ambitions. Bloomberg reports that code hidden within Netflix's app suggests that the company is exploring the possibility of offering TV games, with options to use smartphones as game controllers.
Netflix introduced video games into its offerings two years ago and currently has over 55 games on its program. It plans to launch 40 new games on mobile devices this year and collaborate with several developers to produce more than 70 games for the platform.
While Netflix has not disclosed its plans for TV gaming, the company's earnings release stated that it is building fourteen new games through its studios and will launch a new studio in Southern California soon. The studio will be led by Chacko Sonny, a former executive producer for Activision Blizzard's Overwatch franchise.
The move to integrate Netflix's gaming service into television sets could attract new and returning subscribers to the platform, as it offers a more convenient view of the gaming experience. Access to games on the Netflix platform is currently limited to Android and iOS devices and requires an active subscription. If the company's test is successful, it could expand its offerings to include more games on its platform.
