Microsoft Launches Investigation into DeepSeek Over Alleged API Theft

25 Feb 2025

Microsoft is currently investigating allegations that Chinese AI startup DeepSeek may have illicitly accessed OpenAI's API to develop its own artificial intelligence models. The scrutiny follows claims made by David Sacks, an advisor on AI and cryptocurrency to former President Trump, who accused DeepSeek of "distilling" knowledge from OpenAI's technology—essentially suggesting a form of technological plagiarism. If validated, these actions would constitute a breach of OpenAI's terms of service, which explicitly prohibit the use of API outputs for the creation of competing AI models.

DeepSeek has experienced rapid growth in the tech landscape, with its latest AI model, R1, making waves by topping global application charts and drawing direct comparisons to OpenAI's renowned ChatGPT. However, this surge in popularity has caught the attention of U.S. officials, prompting the National Security Council to initiate a review of DeepSeek's activities. Additionally, the U.S. Navy has moved to ban the use of DeepSeek's AI solutions due to emerging security concerns.

The financial implications of these developments have been significant. Nvidia, a leading AI chip manufacturer, has suffered a substantial loss, with its market value dropping nearly $600 billion. Prominent tech billionaires, including Oracle's Larry Ellison and Nvidia's Jensen Huang, have also experienced declines in their net worths as the situation unfolds.

These allegations against DeepSeek have raised serious questions about the future of AI competition, particularly in the context of the ongoing technological rivalry between China and the United States. If it is confirmed that DeepSeek found a way to circumvent OpenAI's protective measures, the implications could be far-reaching, potentially leading to new regulations, legal challenges, and a significant restructuring of the AI industry.

As Microsoft continues its investigation, the tech community remains on alert, closely monitoring developments that could reshape the landscape of artificial intelligence and the competitive dynamics between global players.
