Kenyan Re-Commerce Startup Badili Secures $400,000 Debt Funding to Expand Refurbished Electronics Initiative

25 Mar 2025

Badili, a Kenyan re-commerce startup, has successfully raised US$400,000 in debt funding from Proparco, a French development organisation. This investment will support Badili's mission to expand its refurbished electronics initiative across East Africa.

Founded in 2021, Badili operates in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, aggregating, repairing, and reintroducing used or damaged mobile phones to the market. The company partners with major e-commerce platforms, local trade partners, and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to distribute its devices.

Badili provides consumers with access to high-quality, top-tier smartphone brands at significantly reduced prices compared to new models. By focusing on local refurbishment, Badili ensures affordability without compromising on the quality of its devices.

The US$400,000 debt facility, provided through Proparco's Bridge by Digital Africa initiative, will specifically support Badili's efforts to offer refurbished smartphones. This initiative aims to reduce electronic waste, provide consumers with affordable technology, enhance smartphone access, improve connectivity, and promote sustainability in Kenya and beyond.

"Getting validation and trust from Proparco is a great boost to the morale of the team that is building a sustainable company that enables Africans to own smartphones for a fraction of the cost of a new one," said Rishabh Lawania, founder and CEO at Badili. "As we enter into the phase of profitability and expansion into other regions across Africa, it's a great pleasure to welcome one of the most progressive and supportive DFIs in the world as a part of Badili's billion-dollar journey."

This funding marks a significant milestone for Badili as it continues to scale its operations and impact the re-commerce landscape in Africa.
