Katapult Fund invests $1 million in Moroccan agritech Sand-to-Green

10 Jun 2023

Morocco-based agritech company Sand-to-Green has secured $1 million in seed funding from Norwegian Katapult and pre-seed fund Catalyst. The funds will be used to reinforce the company's operational and execution skills, as well as preparing for the deployment of hundreds of hectares of plantations in dry zones.

Sand-to-Green was founded in 2021 by Benjamin Rombaut, with the goal of providing a long-term solution to the problems of desertification, land degradation, and food security. The company's innovative agricultural and technological approach aims to grow crops in the desert, which can help to capture carbon, fertilize the soil, create habitats for biodiversity, and stabilize local communities.

Maxime Bayen, Head of Venture Building and Lead Venture Partner at Catalyst Fund, stated that the plan put forth by Sand-to-Green is not only ambitious, but also highly innovative and can help Morocco and Africa shift to large-scale, sustainable, healthy, and sober agriculture.

“We are confident that this kind of solution can help Morocco and Africa make a genuine shift to large-scale, sustainable, healthy, and sober agriculture. Catalyst Fund’s goal is to fund and support innovative entrepreneurs in Africa that are working to adapt to climate change,” he added.

The participation of different business angels and two venture capital funds in the funding round signals a growing interest in the development of eco-friendly and sustainable agriculture solutions in Africa. The seed funding will help to expedite Sand-to-Green's operational development and prepare for the large-scale deployment of its Moroccan and African projects.
