Google Opens Applications for 2025 Google for Startups Accelerator Africa Program

Google has announced the opening of applications for the 2025 Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program, a three-month initiative tailored to support early-stage startups harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to address some of Africa’s most pressing challenges. This program aims to empower local innovators who are working to solve entrenched problems across the continent.

African startups are increasingly showcasing their ability to develop localized solutions that tackle specific challenges. For instance, in West Africa, Crop2Cash, an agritech platform and an alumnus of the program, is utilizing AI to digitally onboard smallholder farmers. The platform helps in building their financial identities, granting them access to credit, facilitating traceable payments, and providing productivity tools. Through such initiatives, Crop2Cash is not only improving agricultural outcomes but also unlocking economic opportunities for farmers historically left out of formal financial systems—demonstrating the impactful change that can occur when African startups are given the resources to scale.

Target Audience for the Accelerator

The Accelerator program is specifically open to startups operating from Seed to Series A stages that are based in Africa and developing AI-first solutions. To qualify, startups must have:

  • A live product.
  • At least one founder of African descent.
  • A clear vision for responsible AI innovation.

Benefits of Participation

Participating in the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program offers numerous advantages, including:

  • Dedicated Technical Mentorship: Guidance from Google and industry experts to refine and enhance projects.
  • Financial Support: Access to up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits to help develop technology infrastructure.
  • Global Network Access: Connections to investors, partners, and collaborators across the globe, expanding opportunities for growth.
  • Workshops: Focused sessions on technology, product strategy, human resources management, and AI implementation tailored for practical application.
  • E-commerce Solutions: Specialized support for tech companies in the e-commerce sector.

The Vision of AI in Africa

The potential for AI to accelerate Africa’s development is substantial. According to a report by McKinsey, AI could contribute an impressive $1.3 trillion to the continent's economy by 2030, provided that innovative endeavors are adequately supported at the grassroots level.

“Startups are Africa’s problem solvers. With the right resources, they can scale their impact far beyond local communities,” stated Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startup Ecosystem, Africa at Google. “This program reflects our belief that AI can be transformative when shaped by those who understand the context deeply.”

Since its inception in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa program has supported 140 startups across 17 African countries. These alumni have collectively raised over $300 million in funding and generated more than 3,000 jobs, with many emerging as regional and global leaders in their respective fields.
