Equinix unveils a $160 million South African data center

16 May 2023

Equinix, a US data center provider, plans to spend $160 million to develop its first data center in South Africa, marking the company's entry into the African market. The company plans to cater to huge businesses in the nation, including banks, content and media giants, and hyper-scalers.
Bloomberg claims that construction on the Johannesburg data center will begin in the second quarter of 2022 and be finished by the middle of 2024.

According to Equinix EMEA president Eugene Bergen, "South Africa was a significant priority for us since it is the most developed economy in sub-Saharan Africa. "We are focused on going into Africa, and we are looking at five or six additional nations to join."

Equinix spent $320 million to acquire MainOne, a west African data center company, only last week. The corporation has expedited its growth throughout Africa in part due to the continent's youthful population and rising internet penetration.
Equinix has said that it would "take different methods to maintain a reliable supply, including growing its power capacity, installing several backup generators, and striking arrangements with local grids" to address the power shortages plaguing South Africa.

This week, Vantage Data Centers, which is sponsored by Cassava Technologies, announced the opening of a second data center in Johannesburg.
Approximately 17 kilometers from Vantage's first JNB1 site, which opened in July 2022, lies Ekurhuleni, the commercial and industrial heart of the larger Johannesburg Metropol.
It is in an area that is the cloud on-ramp for some major IT businesses, close to OR Tambo International Airport and less than two kilometers from the NAPAfrica neutral Internet eXchange.

"Outside of continental Europe, South Africa remains a lynchpin for Vantage's EMEA expansion...
According to Vantage Data Centers' EMEA president, Antoine Boniface, the company's decision to invest in a second campus demonstrates the company's dedication to the area and the company's clients who have business needs in this high-demand sector.
New statistics show that by 2025, Africa's data center industry will be worth more than $3 billion, expanding at a CAGR of more than 12% because of rising internet penetration.
