Email Marketing: Tips for Building and Maintaining a Healthy Email List

19 May 2023

Email marketing is a critical aspect of any marketing strategy. However, with the increase of spam filters and email providers' algorithms, it has become more challenging to reach customers' inboxes. To ensure your emails reach your intended audience, it's essential to focus on building a high-quality email list. In this article, we will discuss how the health of your email list affects your email deliverability and provide tips for building and maintaining a healthy email list.

The Importance of a Healthy Email List

The success of your email marketing campaigns depends on how many people you manage to reach, not how many people you email. If you send emails to invalid, fake, or outdated contacts, it can harm your sender reputation, also known as your sender score. Internet service providers (ISPs) use your sender score to gauge your legitimacy as a sender. Therefore, the higher your score, the more likely your campaigns and newsletters will go to the inbox. That's why the health of your email list is crucial.

The Risk of Emailing People Without Permission

If you email people who haven't given you permission or who are no longer interested in your content, your emails are more likely to be marked as spam, which can harm your sender score and make it less likely that your emails will reach the inbox in the future. To build and maintain a healthy email list, you should get permission from your subscribers. You should make sure that every person on your email list has explicitly given you permission to email them. This means that they should have signed up for your newsletter or marketing emails and confirmed their subscription via a double opt-in process.

Verifying and Protecting Your Email List

In addition to getting permission from your subscribers, you should also verify every new email address and use Google's reCAPTCHA on your sign-up forms to protect your email list from fake sign-ups. While having a healthy email list is essential, the success of your campaigns also depends on the quality of the content you send.

Targeted Email Campaigns

To ensure that your campaigns are successful, you should segment your email list based on subscribers' interests, preferences, behavior, and demographics. This allows you to create targeted email campaigns that are tailored to the specific needs and preferences of each segment. By doing so, you can increase your engagement rates and reduce your unsubscribe and complaint rates.

Frequency and Timing of Emails

You should also pay attention to the frequency and timing of your emails. Sending too many emails can overwhelm your subscribers and lead to increased unsubscribes and spam complaints, while sending too few emails can make them forget about your brand and lead to decreased engagement. Therefore, you should find the right balance and test different sending frequencies to see what works best for your audience.

Optimizing Your Emails

Additionally, you should optimize your emails for different devices and platforms to ensure they are mobile-friendly and easy to read on smaller screens and compatible with different email clients and browsers to avoid rendering issues and improve deliverability.

Regular List Cleaning

To maintain a healthy email list, it's also essential to monitor and clean it regularly. This involves removing inactive and unengaged subscribers who haven't opened or clicked on your emails in a long time. By doing so, you can improve your engagement rates, reduce your bounce and complaint rates, and increase the chances of your emails reaching the inbox. Most email marketing platforms offer list cleaning and segmentation tools that can help you automate this process.
