Egypt is set to introduce fifth-generation (5G) technology through its four major telecom operators in the first half of this year, according to Minister of Communication and Information Technology Dr. Amr Talaat.
The introduction of 5G aims to enhance internet speed and reduce latency, improving user experiences and enabling advanced digital services.
This includes artificial intelligence (AI) applications, the Internet of Things (IoT), and smart city developments.
The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is collaborating with telecom providers to ensure the infrastructure is ready to support this transition, positioning Egypt as a competitive player in the global ICT sector.
Beyond faster connectivity, 5G is expected to drive economic growth. The technology will improve telecommunications services and support digital transformation efforts across multiple industries.
This initiative aligns with the ministry's broader strategy to strengthen the telecommunications sector, expand digital services, and attract investments in technology.
Egypt's 5G journey began with Telecom Egypt securing the first license for USD 150 million, granting it the rights to operate the service for 15 years.
In October 2024, Vodafone Egypt, Orange, and Etisalat followed suit, obtaining their licenses to deploy the network.
However, obtaining licenses was only the first step. In November 2024, Telecom Egypt and Vodafone Egypt signed a USD 609 million infrastructure agreement to lay the groundwork for 5G implementation.
Vodafone will use Telecom Egypt's extensive infrastructure and fiber-optic network to enhance service delivery as part of this deal.
The Minister of ICT highlighted this agreement as a key component of the rollout, allowing both companies to work together to introduce improved services.
Investments exceeding EGP 150 billion have been made since 2018 to develop Egypt's digital infrastructure. This includes expanding fiber-optic networks and issuing 5G licenses.
In March 2024, Telecom Egypt partnered with Huawei to integrate advanced network solutions. These include 5G wireless technology, a 5G service-oriented core, and a 5G-ready transport network.
The agreement facilitates a smooth transition to the new technology and supports widespread adoption nationwide.
With these preparations in place, Egypt's telecom sector is moving toward a new phase of connectivity, offering enhanced digital services and improved network performance.
