Edo State Government to Introduce API Integration for E-Hailing Operators

14 Jun 2024

The Edo State Government aims to implement API integration for e-hailing operators such as Bolt and Uber, as well as other e-hailing services operating within the state. This initiative was disclosed by Mrs. Edugie Agbonlahor, the Managing Director of the Edo State Transport Authority (ESTA), during a driver safety summit organized by the ride-hailing company Bolt in Benin City.

According to Mrs. Agbonlahor, the introduction of API integration is part of a broader plan to establish e-hailing regulations in the state. Emphasizing the importance of safety in maintaining and enhancing the ride-hailing ecosystem, she highlighted that the ESTA has already developed the necessary e-hailing regulations, which will become effective once they are officially gazetted.

“To create a conducive environment for ride-hailing operations, ESTA has formulated comprehensive ride-hailing regulations. Once these regulations are officially gazetted, they will serve as the regulatory framework governing the ride-hailing ecosystem. This framework aims to promote orderliness, dispel the misconception that ride-hailing drivers are equivalent to traditional car hire services, and address issues related to harassment by local government task forces,” stated Mrs. Agbonlahor.

During the summit, Mrs. Agbonlahor commended Bolt for organizing the event, which marked the first of its kind in the state. She emphasized that it is the collective responsibility of all drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, just as the government must maintain well-conditioned roads. Safety remains a pivotal characteristic for sustaining and improving the state’s ride-hailing ecosystem.

In addition to API integration, the ESTA will issue visual identifiers for ride-hailing drivers. These identifiers will exempt drivers from daily ticketing and facilitate smoother interactions with local authorities. The collaborative efforts between the government and industry stakeholders underscore the commitment to enhancing ride-hailing services in Edo State.
