03 Feb 2024

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has taken a significant step towards bolstering the economic development of the state by announcing the inauguration of the Abia Global Economic Advisory Council (AGEAC). The council, comprised of 18 distinguished individuals with global acclaim, is part of Governor Otti's strategic plan to transform Abia into a self-sustaining economic hub and position it as a preferred investment destination in Africa.

Among the notable appointees are Ms. Arunma Oteh, His Highness Muhammad Sanusi II, Mr. Bolaji Balogun, and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who will serve as Co-Chairs and Honourary Advisors, respectively. The diverse group of individuals, drawn from various sectors, is tasked with providing strategic insights and recommendations to guide the state's economic and investment policies.

The inauguration ceremony of the Abia State Global Economic Advisory Council is currently underway in the main banquet hall in Umuahia. Governor Otti expressed his honor at the Call to Serve by fellow citizens, emphasizing the council's role in steering Abia towards becoming an economic pride in Nigeria.

In a statement issued by the Governor's Office, it was highlighted that Abia's economy had suffered neglect and fragility due to economic sabotage over the years. Since the inception of Governor Otti's administration in May 2023, the government has been actively engaged in socio-economic re-engineering to rebuild the state from the challenges of the past two decades.

The newly appointed council members, renowned for their expertise in various sectors, are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping policies that drive innovation, attract investments, and ensure economic resilience. The statement underlined the importance of grounding Abia State's economic development strategy in a thorough understanding of both the local economic environment and the dynamics of the global economy.

The Secretariat of the Abia State Global Economic Advisory Council will be managed by Mr. Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu, Principal Secretary to the Governor/Chief Strategy Officer, along with Mr. Charles Egonye, Technical Assistant to the Governor. The council will collaborate closely with relevant state commissioners to address unique challenges and opportunities, positioning Abia at the forefront of innovation and economic development within the region and globally.
