The rapidly advancing field of artificial intelligence is driving significant changes across various sectors, yet the economics of AI remains surprisingly underexplored. To address this gap, the Stripe Economics of AI Fellowship has been established to support foundational academic research in this critical area.

This fellowship invites graduate students and early-career researchers interested in studying the economics of AI to apply, regardless of their prior experience. The initial cohort will consist of 15-20 fellows, forming a vibrant community at the forefront of economic research related to artificial intelligence.

Thematic Areas

While the fellowship encourages research on any aspect of the economics of AI, it particularly seeks to support high-impact studies that:

• Focus on the economics of transformative AI

• Are forward-looking

• Are expected to have durable importance

• Move at a rapid pace

Benefits of Participation

Participating fellows will receive multiple benefits, including:

• A grant of at least $10,000

• Access to a community of like-minded researchers studying the economic implications of AI

• Funding to attend an exclusive conference in San Francisco in early summer 2025, featuring leading economists and technologists in this field

Eligibility for Participation

To be considered for the inaugural cohort, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be graduate students or early-career researchers (including postdoctoral scholars and assistant professors) in economics

• Researchers from any country are welcome to apply

• Prior experience in AI economics is not mandatory; exceptional candidates without a background in this field, including those from other academic disciplines, are encouraged to apply

• Applicants do not need to have a project proposal submitted with their application
