African Development Bank Grants $525k to AFN's Fintech Hub.

26 Apr 2023

The Africa Fintech Network (AFN) and Cenfri are partnering to develop a digital hub project aimed at strengthening the fintech ecosystem in Africa. The African Development Bank (AfDB) has granted $525,000 to support the initiative, which will be funded by the Africa Digital Financial Inclusion Facility (ADFI). The hub will serve as a knowledge repository for fintech entities across Africa and globally and is expected to help overcome challenges such as access to markets, funding, regulation, and product development for underserved market segments.
A survey conducted under the African Fintech Radar initiative, jointly undertaken by AFN and Cenfri, highlighted the challenges that African fintechs face, including limited access to markets, funding, and regulation. These issues hinder the development of products that cater to the needs of underserved market segments and ultimately limit fintech's contribution to creating a more inclusive digital finance ecosystem.
The digital hub project aims to address these challenges by creating a one-stop knowledge repository for fintech entities across the continent. It will offer fintech associations the opportunity to share knowledge and enhance coordination among them, improving linkages for market access and investment opportunities. This initiative is seen as a significant milestone in the AfDB's efforts to support financial inclusion and digital innovation in African nations.
Lamin Barrow, Director-General of the AfDB Nigeria country department, highlighted the importance of financial inclusion for economic resilience and freedom, especially for underserved groups. Fintech, according to Barrow, is crucial to bridging the financial inclusion divide on the continent. By offering strong, accessible, and efficient digital financial solutions, fintech can provide innovative financial services such as payment, lending, savings, financial literacy, and financial infrastructure services.
Barrow emphasized that it is now more crucial than ever to build up inclusive digital financial solutions to boost economic resilience throughout Africa. He believes that with proper investments in innovation and smart digital growth, the barriers to achieving financial inclusion and greater economic opportunity for all can be surmounted. The digital hub project is a step in that direction, and the partnership between the Africa Fintech Network, Cenfri, and the AfDB is expected to yield positive results for the fintech industry in Africa.
