Nigerian TikTok star Charity Ekezie (@charityekezie) is among a prestigious group of six African creators selected for the inaugural TikTok Change Makers program. This global initiative recognizes creators who leverage the platform to drive positive change within their communities.
The program goes beyond recognition. Through the TikTok Change Makers Grant, the platform will donate over $1 million to more than 30 global and local non-profit organizations championed by these creators. Each Changemaker receives a $25,000 grant to amplify their advocacy efforts.
Ekezie, known for dispelling negative stereotypes about Africa, joins a diverse group of African changemakers. Egyptian science whiz Abdullah Annan (@arabscienceguy) simplifies complex scientific concepts for his audience. From Kenya, self-taught chef and former rugby player @theroamingchef brings infectious enthusiasm and his signature "Done!" catchphrase to the table. South Africa is represented by @doctor.siya, who tackles medical myths and sexual health issues with clear, informative content. Mai Gamal (@maigamalofficial), an Egyptian nutritionist and health coach, empowers viewers to embrace a balanced approach to health. Finally, @pilot_onthegram, the first verified South African pilot on TikTok, inspires future aviators, particularly young women, with her educational videos.
Over the next six months, these Changemakers will be equipped with the tools and resources needed to build even stronger communities, reach new audiences, and translate their online influence into real-world impact. Dedicated support includes resources, workshops, and donations to their designated non-profit partners.
"I use my platform to not only entertain but spread awareness on the beauty of African culture and its people," Ekezie shared in a statement. She's partnered with Paradigm Initiative, an NGO dedicated to empowering underserved young Africans with digital skills, and life skills, and advocating for their rights.
"We are constantly looking for innovative ways to communicate our work on digital rights and inclusion in Africa," said Adeboye Adegoke, Senior Manager of Grants & Programs Strategy at Paradigm Initiative. "This collaboration with Charity allows us to reach new audiences and effectively communicate our message to the TikTok demographic."
The Change Makers program adds to TikTok's growing initiatives supporting African creators, including #LevelUp Africa and the Africa Creator Hub. As African voices continue to share their cultures, traditions, and stories on TikTok, these programs empower them and ensure their messages resonate globally.
